New Year’s Resolution 2014

In an attempt to be more mindful while at work, I’ve made a New Year’s Resolution for myself. It’s a simple action that communicates and reflects the person-centered philosophy of my facility, but it can really be applied in any setting.

Whenever I’m listening to or speaking with another person, my feet will be pointed toward him or her. I’m going to try and take this step with my clients, my colleagues, and guests that visit our facility. It is a reminder to slow down and be present while ideas are shared. My body fully facing another person communicates openness and interest in them, while increasing my focus and attentiveness on whatever they’re telling me.

I try not to make resolutions because I often break them, but I think this is a straightforward and simple action that will make a big difference in my practice as a music therapist. Is anyone else making changes this year?
